I’m a fan of Kim Kardashian, admittedly. And no, I’m not ashamed to say it. Yes, she’s somewhat of a controversial figure for several reasons. But I mostly admire her for her business acumen.

Sure, she has a team of people behind the scenes that helps her — not to mention momager Kris Jenner at her beck and call — but that shouldn’t overshadow her merits. It’s clear she knows how to surround herself with the right people. And even though the way she became famous is also controversial, you can’t deny the fact that she made the best out of a bad situation with the hand she was dealt.

It takes character and a strong drive to build a brand and a business empire like Kim K has. Aside from her business decisions, I also think she has incredible taste. Everything I tried that was “Kardashian approved” always surprised me in a really good way. Although not a complete surprise, since she was a stylist to celebrities — most noticeably to Paris Hilton — before she even became famous herself.

For those reasons, when I heard she was venturing into the shapewear market, I was curious to see how well her  SKIMS line would do. Not only from a business perspective but also from a consumer aspect. It seemed like the best business idea she had so far. And if Kim herself designed and built the whole line based on her personal preferences, I felt that there was potential for a good product.

SKIMS has an extensive line of products that are divided into four main categories: Bras, underwear, loungewear, and shapewear which includes bodysuits.

At first glance, I noticed that most SKIMS products are a bit overpriced compared to similar ones in the market. For a relatively new brand, it seemed like overkill to me. Or maybe she was hoping to bank on her celebrity status alone. Regardless, I decided to start my review process with the lowest-priced item — the underwear — and work my way up from there. Also because it seemed like the one product in her entire line that wasn’t overly hyped.

I always had a hard time finding underwear that I like because I’m very particular about the quality and design. Naturally, I decided to put SKIMS to the test in this category. So, without further delay, let’s dive in:

The product I chose to review was the “Fits everybody cheeky brief”.

1. Price

Most of SKIMS underwear seems to be reasonably priced especially when compared to other products of the brand. This one, in particular, is priced at $18. SKIMS currently has an ongoing promotion that if you buy 3 they’re only $36, which brings down the price of each pair of underwear to $12. I took full advantage of that.

2. Color

I liked the choice of colors, not only of the underwear but of all the brand’s products. SKIMS seemed to be taking full advantage of the neutral trend that took the fashion world by storm recently, although they added some new seasonal colors that include neons. Aside from that, you have nine options of neutrals to choose from ranging from sand all to way to black (which the brand calls onyx).

3. Material

The material these briefs are made of is a mix of 78% polyamide and 24% elastane with an interior lining of 100% cotton. They feel very soft and stretchy which makes them very comfortable to wear as they also adjust to the shape of your body.

I sometimes forget I’m wearing underwear at all when I have them on. They give you that second-skin feel and look that is great. So, you don’t have to worry about showing marks of your underwear through your regular clothing.

4. The Fit

SKIMs underwear fits true to size, but because they were made to stretch with wear to adjust to your body shape, the recommendation is to size down. And that’s exactly what I did and it fits perfectly.

5. Care

These pieces are very delicate, and the recommendation is to wash them in cold water or to hand wash them. It’s not recommended to put them in the drier, because they’re so delicate.

Some people in Reddit forums complained that the underwear didn’t last very long after a few washes. And because of that, they were disappointed. My take is that they didn’t follow care instructions correctly. I think that handwashing it would solve that problem.

I always handwash my delicates anyway. Especially when paying a pretty penny for them. I don’t know about you but I don’t like to waste my money.

Last words

Overall, I’m very pleased with this product and I highly recommend it if you want to try it. These are the most comfortable underwear I’ve had in a long time. I’ll be purchasing more of these in other colors and I’ll be trying other models as well.

The only problem I found is that if you want to buy directly from the SKIMs website, there is always a waitlist and it seems the products are never available. That is why I decided to buy them from Nordstrom instead. If you don’t have the patience to wait, I recommend you do the same.

Next, I’ll be reviewing the Essential Scoop Neck Bodysuit. Keep checking in for that review. You can also sign up for our newsletter to be the first to get reviews, the latest updates, exclusive deals, free giveaways, and more.
