I’m used to getting carried away by all the hype when new beauty products come out. Usually, they promise “miraculous” results right away. And I’m sure you can relate. Of course, curiosity always gets the best of me, so naturally, I need to buy them. Many do what they say they will do, while others do not. And the truth is, there’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to skincare products.

The general advice that applies to everyone is still valid: Eating a balanced diet, exercising often, drinking lots of water, and using SPF daily for healthy skin. I’m not saying these are the solution to every problem, but it’s a good start.

However, there always comes a time, when life gets in the way, and we either don’t have the time or the resources to keep up with an optimal skincare regimen. We all love a short cut and the latest internet obsession The Ordinary Peeling Solution happens to be one. Not in the sense that will get results faster, but just as efficient but for a lot less money.

I’m sure you’ve noticed the red faces all over IG and Tik Tok recently — a trend that resembles the “Vampire facial” of a couple of years ago that Kim Kardashian helped get started.

This one, in particular, I’m not quite sure when it got started (hard to point out). But I just happened to be one of the first ones to try it, before it became so… mainstream.

I decided to write my own review for reference, and if you’re considering adding this to your beauty regimen, you might want to keep reading.

The Product

The Ordinary Peeling Solution was designed to be a mild version of the chemical peel you would get in a medspa — minus the hefty price tag. This at-home peeling solution is supposed to be used once a week for better results.

The composition is 30% AHA and 2% BHA. If you’re not familiar with the abbreviations let me walk you through it.

AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid which includes all acids from glycolic, lactic, tartaric, to citric acid. Then, you have BHA which stands for beta hydroxy acid — which includes salicylic acid. This potent combination is supposed to exfoliate your skin and get rid of dead cells to reveal brighter and clearer skin.

How to use it?

If you follow the recommendation that comes with the product you’re supposed to use it on clean and dry skin. Very important for the skin to be dry!

When you first put it on, you’ll feel a slight tingling and even burning sensation that goes away after a few minutes. Leave it on for no more than 10 mins. It might feel uncomfortable at first, and you might have the urge to touch your face. Don’t do it. After the recommended amount of time, you can wash the product off with warm water. Follow with your toners, boosters, favorite serums, and moisturizers.

What is the best time of the day to use it?

I don’t think there is an “ideal” time to use it. But I like to use mine at nighttime just before bed because I know I won’t have to put on makeup after all my hard work.

Very important when using this product is to not skip on the SPF. Whether using during the day or at night time, your skin will be very sensitive to the sun after a few days, so protecting the skin from the sun is key.

How much does it cost?

The best part about this product is that it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg, unlike many other brand names out there. In fact, the whole skincare line from Ordinary is pretty affordable. For less than $20 you’ll get your hands on one.

Does it work?

Short answer, yes! You’ll notice some changes after the first use. Your skin will get softer and a bit brighter. After several uses, you’ll see significant improvements, especially if you have deep acne scars. I mean, this product didn’t get the highest ratings on Amazon for nothing.

It’s important to be diligent with your treatment though and use it every week. After several weeks you’ll see dramatic results. Don’t get too excited though and use more than once a week. In this case, more doesn’t equal better. If you do more than once a week, it might have the opposite effect. You’ve been warned.

Final Words

The hype is real. This product works and it’s great for people who have a problem with hyperpigmentation, sun spots, acne scars, and even fine lines. If used frequently can also prevent breakouts. The only caveat is that it’s a little too powerful for sensitive skin. So have that in mind if your skin is that sensitive.

If you can’t afford to go to a spa every month to get your skin chemically peeled by a professional, this is the closest you’ll get with at-home treatments. The solution is that powerful.
