Have you seen those cute mini-fridges in your Instagram feed?
Ok, maybe, they’re not a new trend anymore, but every now and then, I see one making the rounds on Tik Tok and other social media platforms. And let me tell you, these are really cute.
They look like a tiny version of a regular kitchen refrigerator, with a retro-chic look to them that makes them even cuter, which is probably the reason why they look so good in photos. They also come in fun colors such as cotton candy pink, baby blue, and mint green.
Curious? I was too, so I did a little digging before I got too excited and purchased one for myself. Don’t you just hate those drunken Friday nights online shopping sprees?
Anyway, the first question that came to my mind was:
What are they for?
You might be wondering the same yourself. Mainly they were made for you to have a dedicated storage area for your skincare products, so they’re kept at an optimal temperature.
Should you be worried about your skincare products sitting on your bathroom shelf right now?
Probably not. And if you ask NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross who was interviewed by Elle magazine back in 2019, he will say definitely not.
The reason being is that usually regular skincare products are already made to last without the need for refrigeration. Even when environmental conditions are not optimal such as high humidity and high temperatures like your bathroom for instance.
Beauty industry insiders also say products are tested for stability and durability at the most extreme conditions to guarantee they will be effective for a long time, even before they hit store shelves.
But if not to extend their shelf life then why should I get one?
There are other reasons why you might want to consider a dedicated-skincare fridge.
One is for the cooling factor. Who never put their K-sheet masks, gels, serums, and beauty gadgets in the regular fridge overnight — or for at least an hour before use — just to get that nice cool feeling on your skin? The cooler products can help with puffiness and redness especially after a facial, or a night of drinking.
You might also consider getting one just for aesthetic reasons. Why not? If you think it’s cute and you have the space for it, go ahead and get one. If anything, do it for the Instagram clout.
But the only true reason you may be justified to buy one is if you’re into natural and organic beauty products, or you’re using some type of prescription-strength serum or medication.
For natural and organic skincare products these lack the preservatives and stabilizers regular products do. And some prescription medication might require you to store them at a certain temperature for the same reason.
In those cases, I do believe you can have an entire tiny little fridge dedicated to your skincare products since refrigeration might be beneficial. Just don’t set the temperatures too low. The recommended temperatures for most skincare products should be between 55- and 62-degrees Fahrenheit.
Finally, If you convinced yourself you’re a good candidate for a mini-fridge, or you just want one for the sake of having one — because why not — here are a few places where you can shop for them:
